The Importance of Leaving a Good “Last” Impression

“The characteristic of a great man is his power to leave a lasting impression on people he meets” – W. Churchill

Ok, so we know first impressions are really important. And yes, of course we’ve all heard the saying, “you never get a second chance to make a good first impression.”  But what about “last impressions?”  They matter too, don’t they?

After all, if we were preparing to go to an important meeting we wouldn’t just brush the front of our hair and not the back, right?

Yet, sometimes I think we worry so much about introductions that we lose sight of the importance of making sure that we leave a strong last impression as well.

Great presenters know this. It’s why they always make sure to end their presentation with a memorable story or “wow” moment.

Advertisers know this. It’s why the back cover of a magazine is always in high demand.

Top luxury hotel companies know this. It’s why they always have someone attend the door, offering to help with your bags and asking you about the quality of your stay.

The truth is, what people remember most about an experience is how it made them feel.

How do you make people feel? Do you make them feel that they matter?  Do you:

  • Listen attentively (putting away mobile devices)?
  • Personalize your interactions by remembering their name – and using it?
  • Say thank you?
  • Follow up? (Promptly? Even when it’s not important?)

Next time you have a meeting, or even if you’re just answering the phone at work why not try a few of these on for size. Guaranteed, you won’t just leave a good last impression; you’ll leave people with a powerful lasting impression.

 This much I know.
